Mauritshuis

Projection on the water in the Hofvijver The Hague, created for the Museum Night.

Beeldjutters was inspired by the painting Oude vrouw en jongen met kaars (Old woman and boy with candle) by Peter Paul Rubens. The use of chiaroscuro and the symbolism of the painting, in which the fading fire of the old woman is transferred to light the candle of a young child, can both be seen in the video projections. Fire that extinguishes the old as well as a lighting up the new.

The many paintings of flowers that can be seen in the Mauritshuis are also an inspiration. Growing, flowering and withering: flowers as a symbol of life. While the violin music makes an epic crescendo in the last minutes, we see a big rose aging as a painting, to finally burst into pieces in slow motion above the water level.
